Every time I start something new, a number of fears come up for me. Can I do this? Will I be successful? What happens if I fail? These fears are made worse by the extent of new information involved – the more new information, the greater the “eeek” factor.
I am always wanting to make positive change in my life, but change is hard! The truth is that if your life is exactly the way you want it, you are probably not reading this. But change is what we must do if we want a different result in our lives.
Like the old quote says (Chinese proverb or Albert Einstein, take your pick), “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
So how do I address my “eeek” factor? Over the years, I have learned a number of ways.
One way is to get help – find a friend or family member to share the journey with, read a “how to” book, hire a trainer or a coach, whatever works.
Another way is to recognize that all change involves fear. The difference is whether you let the fear stop you or not. So I work on being more courageous, taking action in spite of my fear.
And there is always the “desired benefit” meditation – taking time every day, sometimes many times a day, to remember what my goal is and why I really want to achieve this desired change in my life.
